SIS JOHNSON
Few things could make Sis Johnson happier than legislation that would keep plastic out of our waterways. As a past chair of Buffalo Bayou Partnership and avid kayaker along the Texas Coast, she knows all too well what a scourge beverage containers are for our environment. Also an avid biker along Texas byways, her views of wildflowers are too often tainted by beer cans and water bottles. She has also served as President and Chair of the Houston literary nonprofit Inprint. Currently she serves on the boards of the Houston Parks Board, The Houston Seminar, Brazos Bookstore, KIPP, and St. Andrew’s School--Delaware. A former high school English teacher, she now divides her time between volunteer work and indulging her passion for the outdoors, hiking, biking, and skiing.
MIKE GARVER
Mike Garver is a longtime Houston resident, entrepreneur, and founder of Texans for Clean Water. Mike has been a tireless advocate for clean and litter-free open spaces and waterways, especially the Buffalo Bayou located here in Houston, which has earned him the nickname “The Trashman of the Buffalo Bayou”. Among his many accomplishments, he was the driving force behind research into the direct costs of litter and illegal dumping borne by Houston and other Texas cities. An engineer by training, Mike invented a vacuum attachment for a boat - called the Bayou-Vac, which has removed well over 2,000 cubic yards of trash from the Buffalo Bayou. He founded Texans for Clean Water in 2013 with the goal of engaging business and industry to share in the responsibility of tackling waterway litter because he believes both the economy and the environment benefits from clean, trash-free waterways.
